MyDentist / work experience

2023

Shadowing at a Hull private dental practice provided first hand observation of implant procedures, hygiene appointments and the workflow between dentists, nurses, hygienists and in‑house dental technicians. Through this, I gained insight into designing, adjusting and fitting custom prostheses, emphasising material choice and overall reinforced the importance of accuracy, infection control, and communication between the lab and clinical team. Moreover, observing patient management, including support for anxiety and managing expectations, solidified my desire to pursue dental technology to create devices that enhance comfort and confidence.

DBTH / work experience

2024

During my time shadowing clinicians in the maxillofacial department, I observed a range of complex dental and facial procedures, gaining insight into the precision and teamwork required in surgical dentistry. I followed patient journeys from consultation to treatment, strengthening my understanding of craniofacial anatomy and the importance of clear communication when supporting anxious patients. Using Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle, I reflected on how oral health affects overall wellbeing and how multidisciplinary teams collaborate to deliver safe, patient‑centred care. This experience deepened my interest in dental technology by showing how high quality appliances directly support surgical outcomes and long‑term patient recovery

Here, I observed routine and restorative treatments, gaining an understanding of how accessible, patient‑centred care is delivered within a busy clinical environment. I saw how practitioners adapt communication for patients with different needs and how preventive advice is integrated into every appointment. Shadowing nurses and clinicians highlighted the importance of teamwork, record keeping and adherence to strict infection control protocols, especially post Covid-19. This experience reinforced my commitment to supporting diverse patient groups through high quality, evidence based dental technology for both cosmetic and functional uses.
