Day 2
The first full day was our first day diving into the academics of the programme. The morning began with an introduction to the case study we would continue to follow and reference in the following days with Charlotte and Louis who were my tutors for the week. In the afternoon, the Dentistry Applications Talk provided invaluable insight into the university application process and helped me understand how to make a portfolio that will stand out. Hearing from current students in this field gave me a boost of motivation and clarity in my pursuits of this career, solidifying my curiosity and passion for dentistry as a whole. The day was rounded off with a social gathering playing games and getting to know each other.
Day 3
Today we were assigned the task to create a presentation of our choice using the case study as a stimulus for us to present to the other students on day 5. We also began our research into PrEP with Louis who gave us a medical and personal overview of the medication. The afternoon was dedicated to a trip to St Johns sports grounds where we played football and rounders. This provided a perfect opportunity to explore the extracurriculars offered here at Cambridge and talk to students about their work life balance.
Day 4
The week is flying by so quickly! This day of academic sessions consisted of intense tutorials and debates about the NHS system and politics. The complex discussions opened my mind to a world I'd never explored before and gave me to opportunity to expand my knowledge around my subject areas linking to my A level subjects. Louis talks about PrEP has provided me with depth to my understanding of biology and the world around me: an invaluable session that I enjoyed thoroughly.
Day 5
Our last full day began with our presentation of which my chosen subject area was safeguarding in dentistry. This was used as an opportunity to use each other to build on our knowledge from earlier in the week and learn through the eyes of our peers. My slides are as shown here.
The main highlight of today was the punting session. It was a chance to enjoy the city from a different angle. It was a wonderful way to take in the stunning scenery although it could be hectic as we crashed a few times. In the evening, the Quiz Night brought out our competitive sides as we enjoyed our last night.
Day 6
After an early breakfast, we prepared for our departure. Looking back on the week, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this incredible opportunity. The knowledge I've gained, the transferable skills I've developed, and the connections I've made are invaluable. This summer school has not only solidified my love for dentistry and intellectual curiosity but also given me a clearer vision of my future. Heading back home, I'm so excited to see what the future brings!
Day 1
The journey to Cambridge was filled with a mix of anticipation and excitement. Arriving at St. John’s College felt like stepping into a different world—a place where centuries of academic history meet modern-day ambition. After a smooth check-in process and getting settled into the accommodation, the welcome meeting was a fantastic opportunity to meet the other students and hear from the programme leaders. Everyone shared a common passion and desire for learning, making it incredibly easy to connect. The evening concluded with a picturesque walking tour of the college and its stunning surroundings, a perfect introduction to my new home for the week, which was a brilliant way to kick off the experience and appreciate the beautiful architecture; this became a common theme of discussion among the architecture students I befriended during this experience, during which we debated our preferred buildings.
